University of North Carolina All managers are also subordinates, and their effectiveness as a subordinate often determines how high they move through the organization. Seven hundred managers filled out questionnaires and provided critical incidents in order to determine the determinants of effective subordinancy. The primary emphasis was upon their upward communication abilities.
