Modeling the Communication Context: A Procedure for Revision and Evaluation in Business Writing

Nancy Roundy

Charlotte Thralls

Iowa State University

This article presents a model for analyzing the communication context of a message and discusses the model's application to revision and evaluation. This context model has two sections. The first (The Context, The Audience, Purpose and Uses), completed before composing, sets the message's parameters. The second (Explanation of Writing Decisions), completed after composing, asks students to analyze their content, arrangement, and style at the global and parts level. Thus section two encourages reflection on all aspects of the message, leading to revision. Section one provides the evaluator with essential contextual information, while section two allows informed error-analysis and further revision.
